The tower is a self-supporting, three-leg lattice structure designed to carry a lightning rod and provide a reliable path to ground for lightning currents. It is suited to industrial plants, warehouses, substations, communication sites and other facilities that require elevated lightning protection.
The tower uses a triangular cross-section formed by three main legs connected with bracing members. This lattice configuration gives a high strength-to-weight ratio, keeps wind load on the structure low, and allows the tower to be built to the height required by the site. Members are fabricated from steel sections and assembled with bolted connections for straightforward transport and erection.
All steel components are hot dip galvanized after fabrication. The zinc coating provides corrosion protection for exposed outdoor service and reduces maintenance compared with untreated steel. Galvanizing covers the legs, bracing and connection plates, including internal and edge surfaces reached during the dipping process.
The tower top is arranged to accept a lightning rod (air terminal). The steel lattice and a dedicated down-conductor route the lightning current to the grounding system at the base. Final rod type, down-conductor arrangement and grounding design are matched to the site conditions and the applicable protection standard agreed with the customer.
Triangular lattice lightning towers are commonly used to protect factories, storage yards, chemical and processing plants, power facilities and communication sites. The open lattice form is also practical where a slim, wind-transparent profile is preferred over a solid pole.
